KOKO is a concert venue and former theatre in Camden Town, London, originally built in 1900 and retaining its original charm and architecture, but now fitted with modern technology to make it the popular music venue it is today. KOKO Camden has been a popular concert venue for many years, hosting a variety of acts from rock to pop to punk and it has also been used as a filming location for many music videos and television programmes.
The KOKO, Camden project was a culmination of years of design work for the KOKO team, and the entertainment lighting design for House of KOKO evolved with the design.
Due to availability issues during this challenging time, we were asked if we could design and supply an audio control system that would integrate with the equipment already installed by other providers.
We were then appointed as consultants for the design of the entertainment lighting systems for the Koko Social development, which also led to us managing the supply and installation. This resulted in infrastructure being installed to be as flexible as possible within the space, with lighting fixtures installed for Ellen’s Bar and further facilities throughout the building.
As the project progressed, we were also approached and asked to help design and supply other areas such as live video distribution, audio routing and control, and large format displays. We were able to scale up our onsite team at short notice and supply systems that integrated with the existing infrastructure.
This extensive project ran from 2019-2022 (during the Covid pandemic), and we faced many delays and challenges such as equipment availability and onsite safety and working conditions. However, we were able to overcome these challenges and also mobilise on extremely short notice to meet the client’s additional needs. We designed solutions that used the already specified infrastructure and (crucially) were available during this challenging time.
What started as a small project ended up as a full refurbishment and extension of this iconic London music venue. The result is an amazing nightclub, with a world-class audio system, that can accommodate up to 1,500 people.
